he Farmer Support Group (FSG) is the Community Development and Outreach Division of the Centre for Environment, Agriculture and Development (CEAD). FSG was established in 1985 in the Department of Plant Pathology with the aim of making scientific knowledge relevant to smallholder farmers.
Farmer Support Group provides training, advice and project support to resource constrained farmers in sustainable farming, nature conservation, strengthening local institutions, and enterprise development. We also train development practitioners and students in participatory approaches in research and extension. All projects are designed with community members, and implemented in partnership with other service providers, including government extension staff and scientists.
FSG Core purpose:
FSG Core purpose:
- Farmers are enabled to appreciate natural resources and indigenous farming practices. They engage in research on sustainable farming practices and natural resource-based livelihoods, using their own innovations to address vulnerabilities and enhance resilience;
- Development practitioners (existing and future) are trained to engage with farmers and other land users in participatory ways in research, extension and development;
- Staff are enabled to employ processes that result in client-responsive services while achieving FSG's strategic goals.
